Shamim M. Momin opened the Hot Topics Discussion Series

Shamim M. Momin opened the Hot Topics Discussion Series at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood last Saturday evening.  This series which will consist of five lectures by leading figures in contemporary visual arts, is funded in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of the Knights Arts Challenge.

Over one hundred and fifty art enthusiasts from Key West to Palm Beach County showed up for a pre-talk reception followed by a presentation and Q&A session with contemporary art director, curator and Co-founder of the recently formed Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND).
In her discussion Momin presented images of her 2010 project  the island , a single evening event that took place during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach.  She invited 18 international artists to integrate on site works onto Flagler Memorial Island for the one day event.  She discussed her goals of bringing people to spaces that they might not necessarily visit and ideas of integrating art into our natural experience.  Momin also addressed questions on collaboration and logistical constraints of  dealing with public art and art spaces.

Work Staring me down

These two paintings have been staring me down for two months! Now I must play catch up!

I was recruited to the Arts Council of Weston this year to chair the Student Artist Showcase which took a lot more time than anticipated! But it turned out great!  Also showed the placement award winners @ ArtWalk and Showtime
Started a new blog to document what is going on in Weston, a small town with a big heart for the arts.  Check out www.artsweston.com .

Wynwood After Basel

After the Circus of “Art Basel Miami Beach” has left town, the streets of Wynwood are once again all but deserted.  On a beautiful January afternoon the solitude is broken by the occasional biker pedaling along or the sound of auto body mechanics ordering their lunch from the local food truck parked in the middle of the street.

The only signs that the circus had even been in town are the colorful graffiti murals covering the walls of this warehouse district in transition.  But step inside one of the many galleries hiding behind nondescript metal doors and there you will find the smaller acts working hard to present their shows to the public.

A few of the shows now on exhibit in Wynwood are reviewed here
